Stop Wasting Money on Premium Fuel

You take good care of your vehicle. You always take it in for its routine check-ups and get it cleaned regularly. But are you also under the false impression that premium fuel is what is best for your car? If so, you may be surprised to find out that premium fuel has no effect on ordinary vehicles that do not specifically express a need for premium fuel.

What Does Premium Fuel Really do?

In short, cost you more money. While some car manuals do suggest using premium fuel, and if they do you should listen, most cars do not require this. The main difference between premium and other grades of gas is the combustibility. Premium gas is less combustible which makes it ignite easier when compressed. This can make the engine more powerful.

However, since there are already regulations on putting additives in gasoline it will likely not improve the performance of your vehicle.

So I Should Not Use Premium Fuel?

Ultimately, it is up to you what you put in your vehicle. In some cases, you should use premium fuel. As mentioned, some vehicles, like sports cars, require premium fuel. Your car may also benefit from premium fuel if you hear a “knocking” whenever you try to start your vehicle. This can be a number of things so it is best to check with your dealer or mechanic.

In general, no you will most likely not benefit from using premium fuel. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently released some information concluding consumers will find there is no benefit when using premium gas over regular.

Many car owners want to give their vehicles the best treatment. Correctly concluding that if they take excellent care of their car it will last longer. While this is true, you can rest assured with your regular gas knowing it will not affect the life of your vehicle.
